Does a Pension Count in Net Worth?
How to record pension balances and future pension income in net worth, with U.S. and U.K. examples, vesting, tax, and access restrictions.
For a balance-based net worth statement, include vested defined-contribution pension balances and record access restrictions separately. Keep defined-benefit and state pension income in a retirement projection unless you deliberately use a documented pension-wealth valuation. This guide uses U.S. and U.K. examples; scheme rules, taxes, and access ages vary.
Pension can mean an invested account or a right to future retirement income. That difference determines which figure is useful on a personal balance sheet. This guide uses a balance-based convention for everyday tracking, not a valuation for a pension transfer, divorce, or lending decision.
Which pension balances belong on the statement?
Include the vested amount shown by a defined-contribution provider, such as a U.S. 401(k) or U.K. SIPP. An IRA is a U.S. retirement account that can be recorded in the same way. Show the statement date and keep retirement assets separate from cash available for current spending.
For the U.K. distinction, MoneyHelper explains defined-contribution pots and defined-benefit income. U.S. IRS vesting guidance explains why employer contributions may have vesting conditions. Use your provider's vested balance rather than assuming every contribution is already yours.
How should I record defined-benefit and state pensions?
Record expected annual income, the starting age, inflation provisions, and the source of the estimate alongside your retirement plan. These rights can have economic value even though they are not a liquid account balance. Leaving them outside this balance-based total does not mean they are worthless or that every net worth convention excludes them.
A broader pension-wealth calculation needs explicit assumptions about life expectancy, discount rates, survivor benefits, and inflation. Keep that estimate separate so it is not confused with a pot available to withdraw or counted again as future income.
Should balances be before or after tax?
Use stated pre-tax balances consistently for the basic statement. For spending decisions, calculate a separate after-tax scenario and label its assumptions. Tax-deferred and tax-free accounts with the same balance need not provide the same spendable amount. Access restrictions also differ by scheme and country.
What about a cash equivalent transfer value?
A scheme quote is a value for a particular transfer decision, not cash already in your account. Do not add both that quote and a capitalized value of the same future income. MoneyHelper's U.K. transfer guidance explains the benefits a transfer can give up and when regulated advice is needed. A tracking preference is not a reason to transfer a pension.
How do I include old workplace pensions?
Use old statements and employer records to identify providers, then request current balances or income forecasts. Add each entitlement once. A pension moved to a new provider should not remain in the total under its old account as well.
How does this fit into the rest of net worth?
Keep cash, taxable investments, retirement balances, and property in separate groups so access restrictions stay visible. The personal balance sheet guide explains the layout, and the asset checklist covers other inclusion decisions. Follow the Nethaven tracking instructions to record supported balances and manual assets.

Frequently asked questions
Does net worth include a pension?
Under the balance-based convention used here, include vested defined-contribution balances. Record defined-benefit and state pension income separately. Broader pension-wealth calculations can value those income rights, but must disclose their assumptions.
Is a 401(k) part of net worth?
Include the vested balance. Check whether employer contributions are fully vested and record tax and withdrawal restrictions separately from current cash.
Does a state pension count as net worth?
This guide records it as projected income outside the balance-based total. A broader analysis can estimate its present value, but that estimate is not a withdrawable account balance.
How do you value a defined-benefit pension?
For everyday tracking, record the provider's annual income forecast and starting age. A present-value calculation or transfer quote serves a different purpose and needs explicit assumptions. Do not count the same benefit twice.
Should I count a pension before or after tax?
Use the stated pre-tax vested balance for a consistent basic statement. Keep an after-tax spending scenario separately, with its tax and withdrawal assumptions visible.
Do old pensions from previous jobs count?
Yes, where you still hold vested balances or income rights. Confirm them with the provider and check for transfers so the old and new account are not both counted.
Does this determine what goes on a mortgage application?
No. Use the lender's requested definitions and evidence for an application. A personal tracking convention does not establish lending eligibility or legal ownership.
