How to choose an emergency fund target

An emergency fund is cash reserved for necessary expenses when income stops or an urgent cost appears. The calculator turns a monthly essentials estimate into a target by multiplying it by your chosen number of coverage months. It also compares that target with the cash you already have set aside.

How the math works

Target = monthly essential expenses × coverage months
Remaining = max(target − current emergency savings, 0)
Progress  = current emergency savings ÷ target × 100

What changes the number

  • Stable income, multiple earners, and strong insurance can support a shorter runway.
  • Variable income, dependents, health needs, or a specialized job can justify a longer runway.
  • A large target does not have to be reached at once. A smaller starter buffer can be the first milestone.

If you are unsure what belongs in the monthly number, use the budget calculator to separate needs from wants. Then use the savings goal calculator to turn the remaining gap into a contribution plan.
