Create a budget

How to set up categories, review actual spending, and adjust a budget after the first month.

Start with broad categories that match how you make decisions: housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, subscriptions, debt payments, savings, and discretionary spending. You can get more detailed later, but too many categories at the start can make review work harder.

After the first month, compare the budget with actual categorized transactions. Adjust only the categories that clearly need it. The best budget is not the strictest one; it is the one you can repeat while still making progress on savings, debt, and long-term goals.
