Split a transaction across categories
Divide one transaction across several budget categories, such as groceries and household items on one receipt, while the account still shows a single transaction.
Step-by-step guide
Desktop web walkthrough
Follow these steps in the current product UI. Use the platform switcher to show instructions for another supported platform.
Select Split next to Category
Open Transactions and select a row to open Edit transaction, or choose Create transaction for a new one. Select Split at the right of the Category label. Transfers do not show it.
Fill in each line
Each line has an amount, a category, and an optional note. Select Add line for more lines, or press Enter in the last amount. Split evenly fills empty lines with what is left, or divides the total across all lines when none are empty. Remove a line with the x; Undo in the notice brings it back.
Save when it shows Fully assigned
The bar under the lines shows how much is left to assign or over the total. Save changes, or Create transaction for a new one, turns on when it reads Fully assigned and every line has a category. Type and Budget are locked while the transaction is split.
Check the table
The Category column shows Split · 3 for the row. Select the chip to show each line's category, note, and amount under the row, and select it again to hide them. A budget category's transaction list shows only that category's part of the row, such as $90.00 of $150.00. Bulk category changes skip split transactions and tell you how many were skipped, so edit those one at a time.
